How this estimate works

We calculate from the measurements you enter, apply the selected coverage or waste factor, and round purchasable items up where partial packages are impractical.

Unusual layouts, product tolerances, local codes, and site conditions can change the final quantity. Use product instructions and approved plans for the final order.

Concrete cost planning guide

Estimate a concrete project from local prices

This estimator first calculates the ready mix volume, including your waste allowance. It then adds the prices you enter for material, delivery, short load service, pumping, labor, preparation, reinforcement, finishing, permits, and contingency.

Order volumelength × width × (thickness ÷ 12) × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ 27Project totalmaterial + delivery and fees + labor + preparation + reinforcement + finishing + contingency

Worked example

A 9 foot by 9 foot slab at 4 inches thick equals 1 cubic yard before waste. Using user entered amounts of $150 per cubic yard, $50 delivery, $100 short load service, $2 per square foot labor, $38 preparation, and 10 percent contingency produces this arithmetic example.

Ready mix$150
Delivery and short load$150
Labor$162
Preparation$38
Subtotal$500
Total$550

The example demonstrates the formula only. It is not a current price guide or contractor quote.

How much is a yard of concrete?

One cubic yard is a volume equal to 27 cubic feet. Its purchase price depends on the mix, supplier, location, quantity, and delivery requirements. Ask a local supplier for a current price per cubic yard and separate delivery, short load, or pump charges, then enter those values here.

Bagged mix or ready mix?

Bagged concrete can suit small jobs, but the material comparison is only one part of the decision. The calculator uses approximate mixed yields of 0.30 cubic feet for a 40 pound bag, 0.45 cubic feet for a 60 pound bag, and 0.60 cubic feet for an 80 pound bag. Check the exact package yield and consider mixing time, equipment, and labor. Ready mix may involve minimum orders and delivery charges.

Common questions

Concrete Cost Estimator FAQ

How much does a yard of concrete cost?

There is no reliable national price for every project. Ready mix prices vary by location, mix design, order size, supplier, and date. Enter a current local supplier quote and include delivery and short load charges.

What costs should a concrete estimate include?

A useful estimate can include ready mix, delivery, short load charges, pumping, labor, site preparation, reinforcement, finishing, permits, and a contingency chosen for the project.

Does the estimator compare bags with ready mix?

Yes. Enter a price for the selected bag size to see the bag count and material total. The bag total does not include mixing labor, equipment, delivery, preparation, or finishing.

Why are the price fields empty?

Concrete prices are local and change over time. Empty fields prevent an old or unrelated price from appearing to be a current quote for your project.

What do the 90 percent and 110 percent totals mean?

They are simple sensitivity checks around your completed estimate. They are not claims about local market prices or a predicted contractor quote.
